Ovi Only Wants To Play For One Of Two Teams - Dynamo Moscow Or The Caps

RMNB - Igor Rabiner asked Ovechkin about his next contract during an interview with Sport-Express after the Caps’ recent west coast swing.

“I won’t make any comments for now,” Ovechkin said, before making a comment. “I still have a contract, but I’ve been playing only for two teams in my life: Dynamo Moscow and the Caps. I don’t like too much to change teams.”

Quick little tidbit from Ovi and I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to make me feel really good or really scared.

The good is he isn’t going to be annoying about his new contract- he’s locked in until 2021 and loves playing for the Caps.

The bad is he obviously leaves the door open to return to Russia.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I don’t want to think about Ovi going back to Russia after 2021, but we know it’s a definite possibility because he wants to play in the Olympics. After the NHL didn’t let players play in these last 2018 Games, you know Ovi, having now won a Cup, is going to do everything he can to chase a gold medal in 2022. Which would mean not re-signing in Washington and rejoining Dynamo so he can play for mother Russia.

Your contract ends up in 2021. The Olympics are scheduled for 2022. Are you thinking about going to Russia for one season?

Alex Ovechkin: It depends on many factors: my family, my physical condition, etc. As I said, let’s not look that far. We’ll figure everything out closer to the Olympic games.

Again, props to him for shutting down questions about it 3 years in advance, but also at the same time not shutting down questions about it at all! He’s like “we’ll talk about it later” while being like “it’s definitely on the table that I’ll be leaving”.

Obviously Ovi has accomplished everything there is to accomplish in the NHL. All the MVPs, all the scoring titles, lifted the Cup, etc etc etc. Then there’s that one little tiny record he’s chasing- Gretzky’s goal record. And what’s sick is it’s not even close to out of the question. All Ovi would have to average is 33.5 goals over the next 7 seasons to breaks Wayne’s record. 33.5 a year is absolutely not even close to out of the question. But if he wants to win a gold medal and give up that chase, it’s understandable. Dude just loves Putin his country and wants to try one last time to win Gold.

What this blog just made me realize is Ovi isn’t going to play forever and I don’t like thinking about that at all so this blog is now done.

Wait.

Ok now blog done.
