Habitat for Humanity will be building a wall around affordable homes in Collier County. The nonprofit has gotten the go-ahead to build 116 new affordable homes in East Naples, as long as a concrete wall separates them from nearby communities. The new neighborhood will be near US-41 and Greenway Road.

Habitat for Humanity’s Regal Acres One has been in the East Naples community for years. Regal Acres Two is newly proposed for nearby, and will be about 23 acres with about 116 homes built on that land.

But there are new concerns from neighboring communities. Regal Acres Two has been a project in the works for years, but getting it to an acceptable point for neighbors has taken some extra steps.

There’s this rich community in Florida that was so against Habitat for Humanity adding affordable housing that they had to have a fucking eight foot wall installed so the newcomers were alienated from the rest of the county. This is after it was announced the new homes would be surrounded by lakes, preserves, and other things to keep them away from everyone else.

The new homes would be completely surrounded by either lakes, preserves, or other land. But, nearby neighbors wanted more, so Habitat for Humanity agreed to built 8-foot concrete walls around parts of the neighborhood. Those walls would be connected by a chain-link fence.

Nope, that wasn’t good enough. EIGHT FOOT CONCRETE WALLS had to be added because these rich Florida people think we’re in the movie World War Z and these newcomers are carrying infectious diseases that could end society as we know it.

It’s Habitat for Humanity, not let’s build this house with a few pieces of hay and have homeless people live there.

And how about Cynthia totally not judging here.

“I’m not going to judge, but I’m just glad they’re going to have the wall for the other people who feel like their privacy is getting invaded,” neighbor Cynthia Ellis said.

Definitely not judging at all. Totally fair minded Cynthia.
Of course this is Florida.
