22 Years Ago Today, Barry Bonds Beat Mark McGwire In The HR Derby

Man, steroids were so fucking cool. We’ve seen higher totals in more recent years, but the general strength of these dingers is impossible to replicate without the sauce. Juiced balls just don’t have the same effect, either. Yeah, we get more home runs, but if I don’t have the violence that can only be generated by McGwire’s overly-inflated forearms then I don’t want it. Bonds needed three in the final round to win it, it took him three swings – guy never even considered getting an out and building the anticipation. Just give me my trophy and get me the fuck outta here.

There are no shorter versions of this Derby available on Youtube, so you’re gonna have to skip around to see Bonds and Big Mack go big fly but it’s worth it. You can also watch Brady Anderson stroke 11, or Gary Sheffield put up a goose egg. There’s also a commercial for Dennis Rodman and Hulk Hogan promoting WCW’s Bash at the Beach, I wont tell you when it airs within this two hour window you’re gonna have to find that gem on your own. What do you have better going on in your life? What, all of a sudden you’re too good to watch 22 year old home run derbies and Sports Illustrated commercials for a free Chicago Bulls watch with purchase of subscription? Alright fine, here’s just the final round.

Why it was recorded on a television from across the room, I have no idea. Why there’s a weird clicking noise accompanying the video? Also, no clue. But there’s just the final round for you lazy bums, including Bonds’ incredible walk-off bat flip.

There’s no chance that ball or bat have landed yet.
