Mississippi State Keeps Winning And Apparently It's Because Of A Fruit

Baseball fans do a lot of weird shit, no offense. I know I may get absolutely roasted for this, but I can’t get behind whole baseball superstitions thing. I just don’t believe talking about a no-no dooms said no-no. But nevertheless, a lot of people believe in them.

One superstition that I can get behind though is random shit that sparks rallies. I don’t believe they work, but they make the experience more entertaining. The amount of random shit that has sparked hits or ended slumps is pretty hilarious.

Cue the College World Series. Move over rally caps, Mississippi State has taken superstition to a whole new level. They have…

…rally bananas.

Yes, bananas.

It all started when the Bulldogs were almost eliminated in the Tallahassee Regionals and one of their players decided to have a snack and then use a banana as a radar gun and a telephone. Good old fashioned fun.

Then they won. And they kept winning.

If you’ve been watching the games at TD Amitrade right now, you will legit see bananas all over the ball park. Real. Fake. Costumes. The works. Players are wearing them in their belts like pistols. They have designated “banana holders” for when the hit. They’re applying sunscreen and bug spray… to bananas.

Dole and Chaquita both have gotten on board. They have created a snap chat filter. (2018, am I right?) Starkvegas has banana drink specials everywhere. The school even handed out “stress balls” that are shaped like bananas to the fans. Really. A bunch of adults holding squishy bananas.

The broadcasters can’t say it. But I will.

Dick jokes galore.

But hey. If it works, it works. As I write this, the Bulldogs are in action to start a triple-header today in Omaha. They’ve had three walk-offs in the post season so far. We’ll see if the bananas keep (the Ws) coming.

Maybe if MSU wins the whole thing, I’ll just be a believer in baseball superstitions. All because of bananas.

PS – Laura Rutledge is ESPN’s dugout reporter for the CWS. Not only is she one of my best friend on the planet, but she’s pretty damn good at what she does. She’s also the true definition of a smoke show. ESPN doesn’t do a lot of things right, but Laura is definitely on top of their win column.

If you want to take a walk down memory lane with Laura , Tex, Caleb and Bus Boy Benny caught up with her at last year’s CWS. Enjoy.
