Russ Tyler Wouldn't Be A Capitals Fan. That Much Is A Fact

So Kenan Thompson was at game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday night. Now I’d expect Kenan to be a fan of two teams, neither of which fully exist anymore. For starters, he’s from Atlanta so at the very least he can still hold the Thrashers near and dear to his heart. But they’re not around anymore so clearly can’t be a fan. Secondly you’d think he’d probably be a fan of the Mighty Ducks. Or at least used to be a fan but as soon as they changed from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to the Anaheim Ducks, I’d jump off that ship as well. At the very least, I could see Kenan Thompson being a casual Rangers fan since he’s right there in New York. But in regards to going to a Stanley Cup Final game between the Washington Capitals and Vegas Golden Knights? He’s got no dog in that fight. That’s where you just show up to the rink in neutral colors and just enjoy the show. Clearly whoever invited Kenan to the game on Saturday night coerced him into wearings Caps colors. And that right there is some grade A quality bullshit.

And now that’s just Kenan we’re talking about. At the very least, Kenan Thompson should have shown up as a neutral fan to game 3. But what if he were to stay in character as Russ Tyler? I understand that Kenan Thompson is his own person and that Russ Tyler was just a fictional character he played in the greatest hockey movie series of all time. But you’d think the longest tenured member in SNL history wouldn’t have any issues showing up to a hockey game in character. And in no world would Russ Tyler ever be a Washington Capitals fan. Russ Tyler was from the streets. The Stanley Cup Final is East vs West. I’m sorry but you just wouldn’t see a kid like Russ Tyler rep an East coast team like that. Especially not when the Vegas Golden Knights are essentially the Mighty Ducks and the Caps are Team Iceland. The Knights are just a rag tag group of guys who were thrown together and everybody counted them out from the jump. Now they’ve come together, learned what it meant to play as a team and now they’re about to win the whole damn thing. Meanwhile the Caps have everything. They have the talent. Alex Ovechkin is the only human being on the planet with a shot that is at least somewhat comparable to Gunnar Stahl. Kuznetsov, Orlov, Backstrom, Burakovsky. They’re all a bunch of Europeans just like Team Iceland. Russ Tyler would be such a ride or die for the Vegas Golden Knights, and it just pains me to watch Kenan Thompson sully his character like that.

P.S. – How many people at the Verizon Center on Saturday night do you think went up to Kenan with their phones out and asking him to say “It’s knuckle puck time”? O/u set at 1000.5
