Country Club Member Resigns Over Club Not Allowing President Obama To Become A Member, Ends Resignation E-Mail With "Stay Woke"

WaPo- The mayor of a tony Maryland suburb resigned from a prominent golf club on Monday because the club might not welcome President Obama as a member. Jeffrey Slavin, the mayor of the Montgomery County town of Somerset, wrote in an email that he would not remain a member of Woodmont Country Club because of a recent fevered debate about whether Obama could join. Some members of the historically Jewish club have said they would not welcome Obama, who has played there four times during his presidency, because of his recent decision not to veto a U.N. Security Council resolution criticizing Israeli settlements. On Monday — which he noted was Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Slavin made good on at least his own resignation. He wrote in an email to the club’s general manager:

“I can no longer belong to a community:

Where Intolerance is accepted,

Where History is forgotten,

Where Freedom of Speech is denied,

And where the nation’s first black president is disrespected.”

Slavin signed his email “Thanks for many great memories,” followed by a quote from the civil rights anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and then the words “Stay Woke.”

I’m not gonna get into the politics of this situation because I don’t understand the politics of this situation. I’m sure there are deep deeeeeeeeeep wounds here so I’m only gonna offend people if I wade into those waters. I just think it’s laugh out loud funny for a suuuuuuuuuuuuuper white dude to end an e-mail over a country club dispute with “stay woke”  I can’t decide if he was using it ironically or unironically. I’m gonna go with unironically. He for sure heard his kids use “stay woke”, made them explain it to him and decided to use it in his rebuff of his old country club. Or maybe I’m underestimating Jeffrey Slavin. Maybe he’s a Cool Dad and that Stay Woke was a hard Stay Woke on the heads of the other country club members. What I do know is the brains of those said country club members exploded all over the wall when they read those two glorious words put together. No way they run in circles where that is a thing. They might be so caught off guard by it that they let President Obama become a member after all. They don’t wanna look too outta touch.
