The U.S. Air Force has apologized to Derek Jeter after an active-duty member posted a photo on Facebook of a citation issued to the retired New York Yankee shortstop for boating in a restricted area near MacDill Air Force Base on the Fourth of July.

Jeter, who lives on Tampa’s Davis Islands, was stopped by Air Force security forces Monday and ticketed $250 plus a $30 processing fee.

The issue came to light because of the Facebook posting. The caption said, “On behalf of the Boston Red Sox, here is your ticket Derek Jeter.”

“This action is totally inconsistent with Air Force values and the responsible airman will face the appropriate disciplinary action,” MacDill spokesman Terry Montrose said in a news release. “We sincerely apologize to Mr. Jeter for any inconvenience.”

Let me get this straight. Messi doesn’t pay taxes for 9 years and gets nothing but Jeter lets his yacht drift a little bit while probably making out with Hannah Davis and he gets a fine? I’ve said it time and time again that these Red Sox fans are animals, but this abuse of power has to take the cake. A global icon and national hero gets a ticket and publicly shamed on Independence Day, and we’re worried this election is going to ruin this country. Shaming our heroes is a much bigger problem.

The bigger questions here however is, does this sound like the actions of a man who just got married the day before on a totally different coast? By all accounts, Jeter and Hannah Davis were to be married in the Napa Valley on Sunday. For anyone who has had a wedding or even been to a wedding, you know that having the wedding, flying cross country and doing any activity the next day, sounds impossible. The citation was at 5:30pm so he would have had to be on a plane no later than 8am PST to even be there.

So what happened here? Did they call it off? Did the media have the wrong date all along? Did they realize that having a wedding on a holiday weekend is tacky and rude? I want all the details.
