Pray For The NBA: Victor Wembanyama Is Now Pulling Off Perfect 360 Layups With Ease
Michael Gonzales. Getty Images.Did I just write this exact same blog the other day when Wemby made NBA history? You bet your ass I did. That's part of the Wemby beat. Chances are if he's playing a basketball game, he's going to do something pretty insane. When that happens, I feel like it's important to take a minute and appreciate what we're seeing because it's unlike anything we've ever seen at any point in watching the sport of basketball.
Our latest example?
I suppose this is where I remind you that Wemby is 7'7. At least, that's what people think. He could be taller. For some reason there's no definitive answer when it comes to that, but what I do know is that 7'7 guys aren't supposed to be able to do shit like that. The agility, the body control, I mean what the hell are we doing.
I want you to look at that entire play. For starters, the Spurs are running Wemby off a screen like he's Steph goddamn Curry. Let's just stop right there and think about that for a second. That's their center. Once Wemby has the ball, he's essentially double teamed, with Poeltl on one side, and then Quickley right there reaching in on the strong side. Does he lose the ball? Of course not. He makes it through that help and sees Scottie Barnes rotating over to help at the rim. Somehow, Wemby contorts his body to execute a flawless 360 layup and then has the offensive touch to lay it off the glass perfectly.
I'm going to say it again. What the hell are we doing?
What's the answer? Seriously. What do you do? If Wemby has stuff like this in his bag, what's the defensive solve? The Spurs can run him off pindowns, let him cook in isolation, post him up, and this is all happening at 7'7. It's all a little overwhelming if we're being honest.
