The Night Before Addison Barger Blasted The First Ever Pinch-Hit Grand Slam In World Series History, He Slept On Teammate Davis Schneider's Hotel Pull-Out Couch - And He Did It Again Last Night Too
Steve Russell. Getty Images. You never know who your World Series hero is going to be. Could be your best guys you always rely on, perhaps a middle reliever who challenges the other team's best hitter in a massive spot, maybe the scrappy 9 hole man? Sometimes it's the guy who isn't even in the lineup to start the game. Last night Addison Barger blasted a pinch hit grand slam, the first in World Series history, to send a shockwave throughout the Dodgers team. The Rogers Centre went fucking ballistic.
After the game his teammate Davis Schneider revealed that Barger crashed on his hotel room's pull out couch the night before. Biggest game of your life and you're getting a good night's sleep on a pull-out couch? Immediately I thought Schneider just told the world his buddy was in a massive fight with his wife and got kicked out.
Turns out it's quite the opposite. Barger and his wife just had their third child. She's back home I believe in Seattle, which he's been flying back and forth from when he can. Barger's family is in town and staying at his place, leaving him homeless. He's turned to his teammates to hop around and crash with during this postseason run.
(ESPN) The past week has been hectic for Barger. On Monday night, the Blue Jays ousted the Seattle Mariners in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series to clinch the pennant. Barger said the next morning, he flew to meet his wife at the hospital for the birth of their third child. A day later, he flew back to Toronto for the Blue Jays' workout -- but didn't have anywhere to stay.
"They set up a place, but I was like, for a few days, I'm not paying for a hotel room," Barger said. "I know that sounds crazy, but I'm just trying to save a buck."
So after crashing on the couch of Blue Jays outfielder Myles Straw for a couple of days, Barger spent Friday night with teammate Davis Schneider, sleeping on a pullout couch in the living room of the hotel suite that overlooks Rogers Centre from center field. Barger wasn't exactly comfortable -- Schneider said he heard squeaks from the bed as Barger tried to find peace -- but it didn't impede him from unleashing the biggest hit of his young career.
I respect him not trying to waste money on an expensive hotel room, three kids aren't cheap in the slightest. You'd think they could hook that up for him considering 1) he's on the Blue Jays World Series team 2) he's a pretty good player
Well, being that baseball is a game of superstition, he had to run it back right? His sister confirmed.
Good man. Back to the pull-out couch it is. Guy hit the biggest homer of his life last night and greatly helped the Jays take Game 1 of the World Series and he's not even sleeping in a bed. I love this shit.
P.S. Schneider heard squeaks in the middle of the night, huh? I wonder what that was…
