Behind a 6th Inning Onslaught, The Toronto Blue Jays Punch First In The World Series And Boat Race The Dodgers In Game 1
Mary DeCicco. Getty Images.A lot of people came into this year's World Series with the assumption that the Dodgers would win in dominating fashion. Well, not so fast my friends. Toronto mashes with the best of them and they don't care about the outside noise. How's an 11-4 drubbing to kick things off sound?
Blake Snell entered this one on fire. He'd been virtually untouchable in his previous postseason starts, going 21 innings and allowing just two earned runs on six hits with 28 strikeouts. The thing is, the Jays feast off of left-handed pitching and have a lineup way better than anything Snell was dealing with previously. Throw out everything you saw from Snell coming into this game.
In the 4th inning Daulton Varsho ambushed a first pitch fastball which served as a left hoot to the jaw of the Dodgers. This ball was crushed.
When we got to the 6th inning things really unraveled for Snell and co. Sheehan and Banda had nothing coming in from the pen. Addison Barger likes to step up to the plate and swing as hard as humanly fucking possible. His bat speed and hard hit rates are elite. When he connects good things happen. When he came in to pinch hit in the 6th he connected. The result? A game-breaking grand slam.
The Brewers scored four runs during the NLCS. In the 6th inning on Friday night the Jays scored nine. It was the most runs in a single World Series inning by a team since the 1968 Tigers.
The Dodgers are not in any trouble yet, but I think tonight served as a wake up call that this won't be a walk in the park. The Jays' 14 hits in Game 1 matched the Brewers total for the entire NLCS. LA will have advantages with pitching matchups moving forward, but Toronto can mash, man. They truly have a relentless lineup. First blood to Toronto. We may have ourselves a great World Series in front of us.
P.s. Yesavage's four innings of two run ball won't blow anyone away, but he limited damage and kept Toronto within striking distance. The Dodgers threatened to blow this open early on, but he kept it together. Definitely an unsung hero in Game 1 who will go overshadowed by the offense.
