Frankenstein Looks Amazing But Do We Need Another Frankenstein Movie & Other Reviews

Netflix has spent a ton of money on the new Frankenstein movie directed by Guillermo del Toro. It's gotten a limited release at theaters across the country before heading to streaming. I caught it over the past week along with After The Hunt, Bone Lake, The Strangers: Chapter 2 and Good Fortune. I have short reviews of each below along with full ranking of 2025 movies.

Frankenstein is a well made movie with good performances and looks great. But it’s also a story we’ve heard and seen countless times. Guillermo Del Toro is a brilliant director. I wish he’d focus on more original work.

Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi are both very good as Dr. Frankenstien and the Monster. The production design was gorgeous and this is the best lit version of Frankenstein ever made. But do we need this movie made again? Especially by this director? He already made a misunderstood monster with The Shape Of Water. 

We understand that it’s about the human condition and how we treat each other. We’ve done this already!If there is someone (anyone?) who doesn’t know this story, this movie should work very well. For the rest of us, we have to hope Guillermo will do something unique next time.

Frankenstein: B

Good Fortune would have been much better and more original if it just focused on the angel played by Keanu Reeves. Instead, we spend far too much time in a weaker version of Trading Places but with Aziz Ansari and Dan Aykroyd.

Ansari also directed this and eventually falls victim to the obvious cliches in a story like this. His overall message of treating gig workers better is an admirable one. But I wish he could have done that with the more interesting side of this story.

I also wish this just could have been funnier. There feels like guardrails around much of this movie. Ansari is both not wanting to offend and also heavily pushing morals. That can be a tough recipe for good comedy.

Keanu stands out here and has great comic timing. Watching this fallen angel just try to survive in 2025 L.A. might have been a far more interesting movie.

Good Fortune: C

After The Hunt is a bloated, over-intellectual movie that might set the record for most missed calls in one movie. An amazing amount of this is dedicated to people not picking up the phone.

This is an especially frustrating watch when you consider the talented people involved. Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield each give impressive performances but the last half of this movie is such a mess that nothing can save it.

This whole thing feels like you are trapped at a party with some academic who needs to over explain everything needlessly using huge words. The extra fun in this is you are also watching them make terrible personal decisions. You can’t be that smart if you fuck up that much.

This is just an exhausting experience. And just pick up the fucking phone!

After The Hunt: D+

Unintentionally hilarious, I’ll always remember The Strangers: Chapter 2 thanks to a horrifically CGI’d wild boar. This is movie is so fucking dumb.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 was a bad movie that relied on terror being random to carry the story. At surface level, that can be scary because there is no motive. But it’s just lazy storytelling. In the sequel, they have the bad guys go to insane lengths to chase after this woman from the first movie. This makes zero sense when you consider there is no motive.

There is a scene in a hospital where multiple innocent people die. The next day, the hospital lost and found is up and running. It’s just total nonsense with no thought it into anything.

It’s a shame that Renny Harlin is making this trash. The same guy once directed Cliffhanger. The scariest part of this movie is the last title card that says To Be Continued.

The Strangers: Chapter Two: D-

Bone Lake is an erotic thriller that’s not sexy or scary. It also tries to be an action/horror at the end and can’t really pull that off either. That’s not to say this is a bad movie but it is a confused one.

This is about a couple who rents a very nice AirBNB only to find out another couple did the same. The second couple plays mind games on the first couple. That’s the first hour.

The cast is likable enough and the four of them do a nice job carrying an entire movie despite mostly being newcomers. I will say the reveal at the end to prove motive is one of the worst twists in any movie this year.

With its short run time and some interesting moments, this might be worth a late night stream at home but I can’t recommend people pay money to watch this.
