Power Move City - Ridley Scott Says Most Modern Movies Are "Shit" So He Started Watching His Own Movies, Which He Thinks Are Really Good And Also Timeless
In a recent interview with Deadline, Ridley Scott was asked what his go-to comfort movie was - and he gave the perfect old curmudgeony answer....
Asked if he has a go-to comfort movie, the British director said: “Well, actually, right now, I’m finding mediocrity – we’re drowning in mediocrity. And so what I do – it’s a horrible thing – but I’ve started watching my own movies, and actually they’re pretty good! And also, they don’t age.”
“I watched Black Hawk [Down] the other night and I thought, ‘How in the hell did I manage to do that?’ But I think occasionally a good one will happen, [and] it’s like a relief that there’s somebody out there who’s doing a good movie.”
Hilarious. He got asked for one movie he enjoys and he spun that into "Movies are so unbelievably bad across the board that I pretty much only watch my own movies now, which are great and timeless. How fucking great is 'Black Hawk Down'?"
I mean, to his credit, 'Black Hawk Down' fucking rocks. As does 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner' and 'Gladiator' and I'll even give ya 'The Martian' and 'Prometheus' as far as more recent hits. It is a bit tough to say that the movies are "drowning in mediocrity" while he's making stuff like 'Napoleon' and 'Gladiator II' however. And I admittedly didn't see either one of those movies, but only because I heard from so many people that did and said they were pretty bad.
Dave Portnoy, the most honest man I know, said that 'Gladiator II' was one of the worst movies of all time!
If Ridley Scott wants to throw stones, I do feel like it's fair to point that out - but I love that he's an old grump if I'm being completely honest. I think it's nice to have a couple of those guys around Hollywood who aren't afraid to speak their mind, no matter how much it makes them sound like Logan Roy. Hell, Logan Roy himself Brian Cox is one of them!
They're like a real life Statler and Waldorf!
