Today Is The Day As Miss Watermelon Makes Her Debut for Dave's Go Go Greys Stable

One of many reasons I eventually came to my senses and begged, er, pitched myself for a job at Barstool Sports is because Dave loves horse racing. 

I firmly believe racing has greatly benefited from Dave's fandom, both as a bettor and now as an owner. Barstool fans have followed him for years, and I think with Go Go Greys Stable, he's going to be part of bringing a whole new legion of fans to the game. Being 100% honest, I want to be here when that happens - any small part of it. 

I love horse racing. I went to Saratoga in the summer of 2003, and I was hooked. And handicapping and betting on horses is a great game. It's you against everyone else betting on the race, not you against the house. That makes it different than sports betting. When you win betting on horses, that means other people lose. So you can use your own opinion - and hard work - to make you a winner. Well, that's the goal, anyway. 

Dave has been busy building the Go Go Greys Stable roster. I think Miss Watermelon is the first one to run since he actually has named the stable.

She'll be the #8 horse in Race 10 today at Keeneland (5:48 EST)

The daughter of Cairo Prince will be going long (a mile and a 16th) on the Keeneland turf (grass). The dam won three of four starts on the turf, and Miss Watermelon has a sibling who tried the turf but was a winner on synthetic. Trainer Jonathan Thomas is not known to win with 2-year-olds debuting on the turf (5% over the last five years). Sire Cairo Prince has had some solid turf runners, including the talented My Boy Prince.

If all of this - including the image above - reads like a foreign language, I hear you. I've received numerous requests to create a tutorial on reading a racing form, betting on horses, and related topics. I'm now committed to some sort of series, probably in video form…assuming my boss approves.

As far as the race today, it looks like Miss Watermelon caught a salty field, which includes #10 Market Chill, who had trouble in her first start for Chad Brown and ran second last time. It being two-year-olds on the turf, it’s hard to have a lot of confidence in picking Miss Watermelon or any other horse as a winner. 

Dave told me today via MutStack.com, "The horse can run. She will most likely be wildly overbet because it’s me, but she should make a good showing of herself."

In the first video above (you should watch it), Dave again says the horse will be overbet -I agree. I'm guessing a lot of Stoolies want to hold a win ticket on Miss Watermelon if and when she wins - she's 8-1 in the program, but I could see her going off at half that price, say 4-1. Maybe even as low as 3-1.
