The Red Sox Failed To Make The Basic Fundamental Plays In A Kick-In-The-Balls Loss To The Yankees

How did Nate Eaton not score on this play?

No, really, HOW DID NATE EATON NOT SCORE ON THIS PLAY???

From the replay above and what we got from ESPN (another TERRIBLE broadcast), third base coach Kyle Hudson gets most of the blame. He seems super indecisive about sending Easton - it should have been an obvious send.

Instead, Eaton stays at third, the Red Sox don't score, and they eventually lose a game they could have won... if they had played better fundamental baseball.

You can see in the replay from the live stream that I thought the runners going might allow the Sox to score two runs at home...they got zero.

Alex Cora has to defend his third base coach, I get it, but he should have scored. The Red Sox had been 5-0 under Cora in elimination games, but they played too sloppy a brand of baseball to win Wednesday night.

You had Jarren Duran dropping a fly ball off the bat of Aaron Judge, giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead. They credited Judge with an RBI single, but it was an error by Duran and a play he had to make.

Or how about Ceddanne Rafaela's inability to get a bunt down in that brutal 7th inning where Eaton didn't score? The first two guys of the inning walked, and Rafaela is out there trying to bunt balls out of the strike zone; bad call from Cora there.

I loved the way the Sox manager played this thing early, mixing and matching after Bello's early struggles. But he had to burn Garrett Whitlock for 47 pitches - hard to imagine he can pitch tomorrow.

Trevor Story tried to will the Red Sox to a win, driving in all three runs and hitting the clutch home run to tie it.

Story has been solid in these first two games. Duran, Romy Gonzalez, Rob Refsnyder, Carlos Narvaez…not so much. You'll need a few of those guys to help out Story and the offense if the Red Sox are going to advance.

Who does Cora plan on pitching in Thursday's elimination game? After Connolly Early, I have no clue. The rookie will get the ball to start against the Yankees against their own rookie, Cam Schlittler.

All hands on deck. Sox/Yankees. Winner gets the Blue Jays. The loser goes home. See ya Thursday.
