Mondo Duplantis Does It Again: Sets His 14th World Record In The Pole Vault And Secured Another $100,000 Bonus
Mondo Duplantis is truly one of the great stories in sports right now. The legend is only 25 and he's already set a world record in the pole vault for the 14th time. He first did it in 2020 when he set the record at 6.17 meters. Well since that point, he's done it 13 times, by consecutively adding a meter each time, leading up to today's record of 6.30 meters.
Jordie wrote a good blog a month ago when he broke it for the 13th time, but basically, Mondo Duplantis is just doing a speedrun of free money because of how the bonus structure works in track and field:
Essentially you get $100,000 every time you break a world record, so for Mondo, it makes the most sense to just keep going up a meter every single time and cashing those checks like it's nothing. For what it's worth, I'm not sure anyone is ever going to come close to beating this record, considering it feels like he's doing this with somewhat ease. I'm starting to think we're gonna have to call him the LeBron of track and field when it's all said and done if he's not already there.
Also, Mondo Duplantis has to be one of the coolest names of all time. There was no way this dude wasn't destined for greatness with a name like that. It's like Yves Saint Laurent. You just know guys like that are going to be legends in whatever field they want, simply because they have too much aura to not.
Just look at this dude posing like "yeah I did it again, so what? I've got 6.40 meters in me before it's all said and done":
Some guys have it all.
