The Long Walk Might Be The Most Overrated Movie Of The Year

The Long Walk was a movie that captured my imagination when I saw the trailer. A story that takes place in a post-war America that has fallen on hard times. A lot of families are very poor in the country and work ethic has reached an all-time low. To inspire the country, each state gets one entrant into an event called, "The Long Walk" where the contestants must keep a speed of three miles per hour or higher for an undefined amount of time. They literally walk until there is one person left. If you fall below three miles per hour, you're warned and then shot in the head.

This movie grabs your attention pretty quickly, but like a ~300 mile walk down seemingly one straight road, becomes extremely predictable. This was originally a Stephen King book in 1979 and ran an hour and 48 minutes. The problem with that is the ending is extremely predictable about an hour in. So you're really just waiting for it to happen.

I would say it's a fine movie. But 90% critic score/86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and the 4th best movie of the year by my guy Klemmer!

That is a lot of hype for a movie that kind of fell flat for me. And that's not to say it's bad. Once they get going, I'm not sure you can really do much more with it. The main two guys, Cooper Hauffman and David Jonnson (from Industry, which is an amazing TV show on HBO) were good. But there are no twists, no surprises really. People fall below three miles per hour and get killed and keep getting killed. That's not a spoiler that's just the premise of the movie. While I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. It was too predictable and went on for too long once the ending was clear. Here's my full review which I appropriately gave it a 6.8/10.
