Ref Show in Dallas - Referee Single-Handedly Forced a Fumble (Resulting in 9-Yard Loss) on SMU QB Kevin Jennings
As a fan of chaos, it's a real shame this didn't happen to Justin Herbert and the Chargers last night. Imagine if an NFL ref recording himself a 9-yard loss for the Chiefs defense? My goodness. NFL HQ would be on fire right now.
To be fair to the ref, this was a heck of a route taken by SMU QB Kevin Jennings on his scramble. When you're reffing a mobile quarterback like Kevin Jennings, it's your job to be prepared for things of this nature. But as a ref... when you're standing behind the quarterback... and this is the situation laid out in front of you...
It's hard to imagine series of events that would lead to him being on your ass in about .5 seconds. Even when Kevin Jennings first makes the surprise decision to flip his shoulders and start running left (as opposed to running to the open field to the top of the screen)...
You still probably aren't expecting him to execute one of the fastest "turn and double back" maneuvers you'll ever see. But boy did he ever. And credit to Kevin Jennings. It should have worked to perfection. He got the defense going the opposite direction. If only the ref wasn't sitting back on his laurels. That ref was in NO POSITION to make an athletic, contact avoiding move.
Jennings really did switch direction there about as fast has a human being physically can. But you gotta be better than that ref. You gotta stay ready. Be on the balls of your feet. Be ready to spin back over your right shoulder if that's what it takes to avoid contact. Anything but committing a sack fumble for Baylor.
And you ESPECIALLY have to be ready for anything and everything when you have a quarterback on the field who's liable to do things like this.
