Pat Kavanagh Picks Up Big Win For Older Brothers Everywhere. Takes Down His Younger Brother, Chris, In The PLL Semifinals
Being an older brother carries a lot of responsibility. You want to set a good example for your younger brother. You want to show him the way, but also push him to be able to carve out his own path. You can be best friends 99% of the time, but sometimes you have to beat his ass a little bit.
Which is exactly what Pat Kavanagh had to do yesterday in the PLL Semifinals to his younger brother, Chris.
Pat is currently playing his 2nd season in the PLL, and he's on his 2nd team after getting traded from the Cannons to the Outlaws this past offseason. He's trying to lead the Denver Outlaws to their first championship in the PLL era. Standing in his way yesterday was younger brother, Chris, who is a rookie having an incredible season for the Redwoods. These guys are best friends. They are still roommates. They were born just a few years apart, and thanks to Pat spending a post-grad year at Taft after high school plus getting an extra year of eligibility thanks to COVID, they were able to play 3 years together at Notre Dame. In those 3 years, they were able to win 2 National Championships together. But yesterday, they were mortal enemies.
On Pat's birthday, no less! There's not a chance in heck that an older brother would let his younger brother beat him on his birthday. Especially not after the younger brother threw a little extra fuel in the fire during this pre-game interview.
BAD MOVE, LITTLE BRO! Now you're gonna have to get a noogie. This one just happened to be in the form of a buzzer beater right before the end of the 1st quarter to give the Outlaws a little juice heading into the 2nd.
It was 4-2 right before Pat Kavanagh scored that goal. From that moment on, the Outlaws outscored the Redwoods 10-3. The Redwoods almost went an entire 2 quarters without scoring a goal. They didn't score at all in the 3rd quarter, and their only goal in the 4th quarter was Chris Kavanagh cutting the lead to 4. It wasn't quite the birthday present that Chris intended to give his older brother, but I'm sure it's the one he appreciated more.

Oh and by the way--it was almost an impossible task for the Redwoods to try to win that game. When the other team has literal mutants out there like Brennan O'Neill and Jared Bernhardt doing things like this, your only hope is to just keep it close.
I've played lacrosse my whole life, so I never know if the game translates to people who haven't played it before. But those two goals are both as silly as they come. There are only like 3 people in the world who can shoot a fadeaway jumper for 2 like Brennan O'Neill did there, and even 3 might be an exaggeration. And Jared Bernhardt finding a way to make one of the best LSM's in the game look like he needed MapQuest to figure out where he was after that dodge is unfair. Turns out that always having the best athlete on the field is a game changer.
