Get a Load of This Georgia Tech Punt Returner's Gigantic Ass Jersey
Say what you want about the "quality of play" in college football vs the NFL, there are just some things college football gives us that the NFL could never match. I'm yet to find a real satisfying explanation as to why this happened. Maybe someone from Georgia Tech will be forced to answer for it (if they do I'll update the blog). But what I did from ball knower extraordinaries in the Twitter replies, is that punt returners are often forced to slip on different jerseys to prevent wearing the same number as someone else on special teams for that play.
Fucking thanks, Jerm. How dumb are we? It's because of the JERSEY NUMBERS rule. Obviously, to abide by that, the only possible option is to have a player slip on a jersey from the back of Kyle Kuzma's closet. That totally explains all of this.
If only the rest of us actually watched college football, then we would see punt returners running around in fucking squirrel suits all the time like you do.
Clearly that still doesn't explain why THAT is their backup jersey option. I suppose a big jersey like that slips over the player's pads easier. In a normal situation, when the returner wasn't caught off guard by Deion Sanders punting from midfield on a 4th & 1 (which is kind of fair to be honest), maybe he would he have been able to tuck it in to a point that nobody would have noticed? But can Georgia Tech not just switch their jersey numbers around a bit so that isn't even a possibility? I know college football teams roster a lot of guys, but I gotta think if Georgia Tech's coaching staff put their heads together, they could do the critical thinking to determine how make sure that's something that will never happen.
And on that returners decision to return that ball… in an appropriately sized jersey, that probably wasn't the worst idea. I think that ball looked like it was going to be downed by Colorado on the goal line regardless.
But maybe when you're dressed for the 2003 NBA Draft…
Then it might be worth forcing the gunner to make a play on the ball. Because once it's in your possession, if any tackler gets within zip code as you, he's getting a handful of poncho, and you're not going anywhere. When you're wearing that jersey untucked, you might as well start signaling fair catch before the ball is snapped. In that thing, where you catch the football is where you're being tackled.
