Matthew McConaughey Is Reuniting With 'True Detective' Creator Nic Pizzolatto For A New Show Where Rip From 'Yellowstone' Will Play His Brother
Before we go any further, allow me to apologize if you clicked into this blog only seeing the 1st half of the headline. I swear I wasn’t just trying to clickburger your ass.
I know what that feeling must’ve been like though… thinking we were actually getting McConaughey back as Rust Cohle for another run…. That’s what I thought this Tweet was about when I first saw it. No TV series news could be sweeter than that. But alas…
…No Rust… No return to the bayou for us…
Just a blurb about a new Netflix series made by the original True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto. It's nice to see Rip from 'Yellowstone' cash a paycheck too but ultimately, this does NOT make it move. Feels like Pizzolatto didn't really prove he can pull off being a full-time showrunner once he took over after S1.
And weirdly this is McConaughey's 2nd current project that's a TV series revolving around brothers? 2 brothers.
But sounds like the AppleTV one is gonna be the winner here though. Or at least the closest thing I'll actually get to rekindling that S1 vibe with Woody.
(Hollywood Reporter) - Details are scarce, but the project is being referred to as “The Brothers Project” due to McConaughey and Hauser playing brothers. What kind of brothers and in what is setting is unclear, but given it’s from Skydance Sports, one imagines there’s a sports angle.
This is not to be confused with McConaughey’s other brothers project that also has ties to True Detective season one — an Apple TV+ comedy that has McConaughey re-teaming with Woody Harrelson. Netflix had no comment on the project. McConaughey has a notable fall ahead of him as he returns to movies for the first time since 2019.
It's been a bummer to see 'True Detective' fade into Bolivian and basically have no impact anymore. Although when you really break it down, the only season worth recommending was S1. And that was way back in 2014.
Everything after that was hot garbage, aside from a few brief moments. Mainly Colin Farrell threatening to skullfuck that little kids parents. That was fun.
And who knows what the fuck this most recent season with Jodie Foster was going for… Pizzo definitely wasn't a fan. And he also wasn't involved with its creation whatsoever. Don't expect his relationship with HBO to get repaired anytime soon.
Notably absent from the bidding mix was HBO, which has had a rocky relationship with Pizzolatto, who last year openly dissed the network’s fourth season of the anthology crime drama he created. McConaughey, meanwhile, was previously in talks to potentially star in a Yellowstone spinoff series. Creator Taylor Sheridan has instead developed a different Yellowstone spinoff titled The Dutton Ranch, starring Hauser and Kelly Reilly. Going back further, McConaughey and Hauser also starred in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused, giving both actors early-career breakouts. So this new project is rather interesting combination of talent with an intertwining history.
McConaughey would've certainly crushed in a Yellowstone spinoff but there's like 23 of those already, all set on that partner.
The 'Dazed and Confused' reunion aspect is alright alright alright though.
Maybe someday deep down the road we'll be able to get the Rust & Marty follow up we deserve. I'd watch those dudes hang out anywhere, crime ridden or not.
Fingers crossed they do a follow up on Lisa Tragnetti's whereabouts.
THE S1 GOAT.
Until then, I guess these montages will have to do. Come back soon Rust, we miss you.
PS: Huge thanks to Rust for imbuing my spirit with his hardened resolve when I came back to Barstool in 2017. Time really is a flat circle after all. That reminds me, I still owe Handsome Hank a free lunch.
