The Connor McDavid Free Agency Watch Has Officially Begun, And He's Starting To Choose His Words Carefully

Listen. This is hockey we're talking about. It's not the NBA where guys are addicted to being a part of the circus. It's not the NFL where guys are always looking to capitalize on the biggest contract they can sign because you never know when that next hit you take will end your career. Hockey players love stability, and the big names rarely ever actually make it to free agency. And Connor McDavid is one of the most "hockey player" hockey players out there.

With that being said...the word "intention" is getting thrown out there A LOT by McDavid in that answer. And the thing about life is that it doesn't always work out the way you plan. You can have all the intentions that you want, but things happen and circumstances change. For example--I have the "intention" of showing up every summer with a 6-pack. I know it'll never happen because I like to snack too much. But it's still my intention, even if I know I'm going to be carrying around a little extra fluff in the midsection.

McJesus saying it's his "intention" to win in Edmonton isn't a lie. That's definitely his plan. But it also gives him a perfect opportunity to sign somewhere else if he doesn't end up signing an extension, and it doesn't come off like he was just talking out of his ass the whole year. Because shit happens and circumstances change. It's the perfect out if the Oilers come out next season and completely fall apart after back-to-back Cup Final losses.
