It Is Once Again As Good Of A Day As Any For Dave Dombrowski To Pay Kyle Schwarber His Money

We've all been there before. You're a little tight on money, but there's something you really want to buy. You toy around with the idea of pulling the trigger, but ultimately you decide you're going to wait. You think to yourself it'll have to go on sale eventually.

So you wait a month and check back in. No sale yet, so let's keep waiting. You check back a month later and for some reason, the price went up. Supply and demand? Who knows how the economy works, but you figure it's only temporary. The price will go back down eventually to its original cost, and now it'll feel like you're saving money. You check back a couple months later and now the price has skyrocketed. Now you're fucked. Now you know you can't afford it, but you still need it just as bad as ever. In fact, you might even need it more now.

And that's how things have gone for Dave Dombrowski, the Philadelphia Phillies, and Kyle Schwarber.

"We know it probably won't be easy"

Uhhhhh yeah, Dave, ya think? The Phillies could have tried to lock up Kyle Schwarber back in February. He was waiting for a contract extension that never came about. Who knows what number would have gotten the job done back in February to keep Schwarber in Philly, but it sure as shit has to look like pennies compared to what his value is looking like right now. Maybe this was the plan all along. Maybe the Phillies knew they could unlock this mutant mode that Kyle Schwarber is in right now by sending him into a contract year without an extension. Because the man is attacking the ball like it owes him half a billion dollars.

42 home runs on the year, and we are still in the first half of August. He's got as good of a chance as ever to win an MVP. His value is the highest that it's ever been…so far.

I'm sure Dave Dombrowski has been waiting and waiting for Schwarber's value to decline at any point to finally get into those contract extension talks. But instead, that number just keeps climbing higher and higher. Would he have to pay a shit ton more right now to keep Kyle Schwarber around in Philadelphia compared to what he would have needed in February? Absolutely. But at the same time, he'll probably have to pay a shit ton more if he waits until after Kyle Schwarber wins an MVP, the Phillies win a World Series, and Kyle Schwarber is named the World Series MVP. This freak isn't showing any signs of stopping anytime soon. Every day you wait, the price keeps going up. Especially now that the idea is getting thrown around about signing with his hometown Reds.

The thing about Free Agency is that it's the most expensive "free" thing to ever exist. You can't let Kyle Schwarber go to the open market. Pay that man his money right now, and maybe just skip lunch for the next few years to be able to afford it in the budget. If John Middleton needs to pick up a 2nd job to afford it, then so be it. But this man needs to stay in Philly for the rest of his career.
