NFL Film Bro Study Session: What Happened On The Anthony Richardson Play?
NFL Film Twitter could give Politics Twitter a run for it's money. So I want to make a safe space where I'm comfortable enough in my ball knowing skin to be able to raise my hand and say "Hi. I'm Stathole and I don't know shit about fuck with film". Typical stats guy, right film bros? So let this be the first of perhaps a handful of film breakdowns where I try to figure out what the hell happened all from the comfort of this blog and the good natured Barstool commenters who already stopped reading at this point in the blog.
The fact is a lot of us can relate and might actually like to learn at least a little when we see Anthony Richardson's controller batteries die in the first quarter and wonder what in the actual fuck happened. Bad to point where you wonder if you missed something.
Here's a nice clean clip if for whatever reason you weren't tuning in to watch the great Daniel Jones / Anthony Richardson battle:
A lot of people wondered if the running back missed a block here. Hand Up. I wondered if the running back missed a block here. Not to say I trust Richardson whatsoever. Just going with what I'm seeing. I mean - who calls a play where both the tight end and running back don't even bother to chip anyone while the quarterback's first read is on the complete opposite side of the field? That just doesn't make any sense to me.
But let's check-in with the film guys. How'd I do on this one?? It was the running back, right?
So like I was saying - definitely not on the running back. Pfft. Obviously….
Far be it from me to question solidified film guys like Geoff Schwartz, Chase Daniel, and Sloth Knows Ball. Here's where I think I went wrong. And probably a lot of other film noobs like me. It's not just that we saw the guy who decked Richardson go by the running back. It could easily just have been the tight end's job. It's the fact that the first read was on the other side. It just makes me wonder who would send in a play designed like that?

But in looking again, it doesn't appear Richardson even attempted to read the line of scrimmage post-snap to confirm who was coming and who wasn't. Which is just absurd. I literally gave Anthony Richardson too much credit. Now if he were going to sling it to the x (that's the x, right?) on his first read right away then… fine? But… well.. he did not.

I for one am shocked this ended up being on Anthony Richardson. I'm sure he was tired in practice when they went over that one though. Looks like maybe he'll get some extra rest now.
I'll be back for another edition of NFL Film Bro Study Session when the moment presents itself. Let me know how dumb I am below. Also if you have a better blog name I'll definitely take notes on that too.
