Eddington Is Not Great But At Least It's Interesting While I Know What You Did Last Summer Is Neither

Eddington might be the most divisive movie of the year. I Know What You Did Last Summer is among the most forgettable. Here are mini-reviews of each of those along with Jujutsu Kaisen, which is an anime movie I saw because I'm seeing every movie that comes out in 1,000 screens or more.

There’s a lot here to think about in Eddington but just being crowded with ideas doesn’t make a good movie. You need a cohesive story. Just making statements isn’t enough.

Ari Aster is clearly a talented filmmaker. This is well shot and does a scarily accurate job making you feel like you are back in 2020. But, much like the year itself, this movie is a crowded and confused mess that makes you feel like you just wasted your time. If that’s the intent of the movie, that’s not a positive.

Saying the political system is broken with bad guys on each side isn’t as revolutionary as Aster wants us to believe. Maybe in Hollywood, it is but regular people have been feeling cynical about our entire. system for decades.

The cast is strong, it’s shot beautifully and to its credit, it is a movie that isn’t afraid to say something. But that’s also its downfall. It’s a mess that wants to say everything.

(I originally had this ranked #51 but after spending a lot of the weekend thinking about the movie, I moved it up to 43rd)

I Know What You Did Last Summer is the movie equivalent of Saved By The Bell: The New Class. It hits the familiar beats of the original but the cast isn’t as charming and it all feels like a bad photocopy.

The original was stupid but fun enough to be entertaining. This movie doesn’t have a Ryan Phillipe or Sarah Michelle Gellar starring in it to give it that extra layer.

If I can’t appreciate this movie, that’s bad. I was 17 when the original came out and do have nostalgia for it. When it tried to hit those “remember when” spots here, it just feels forced or sad. Jennifer Love Hewitt is acting like she’s in a family drama and Freddie Prince Jr. just seems out of practice.

This isn’t a terrible movie but it’s a pretty useless one. Just watch the first one if you have an urge to see young people killed by a fisherman.

It’s challenging for me to give a fair review for Jujutsu Kaisen. I’m not an anime fan. I’m only seeing it because I’m seeing every movie that comes out in 1,000 screens or more this year and this did.

I don’t think that’s the case with most genres. Anime is just a very specific thing and I think that’s why its fans are so loyal. They love the humor and storytelling. I mostly do not.

I will say this was better than Dan Da Dan (which I also saw this year). The first 2/3 were more interesting to me as it told a story of two teenage sorcerers trying to keep a younger girl safe. The last 1/3 was more downbeat and focused on why it kinda sucks having powers. It might be because I’m unfamiliar with the genre but I thought the action sequences earlier on were much more entertaining.

I can’t recommend this because I didn’t care for it but if you liked Dan Da Dan, you might love this.
