VAMOS! Leo Margets Becomes The First Woman In The Modern Era To Make The WSOP Main Event Final Table
VAMOS LEO!!!!!
What a weekend for the WSOP Main Event! Between the Kassouf drama (more on that later), Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi thumping his way to the final table (more on that later) and Leo Margets becoming the first woman in the modern era to make the final table, the Main Event has never been more back!
We always talk about "what's best for poker". Would it be best if an amateur won? Would it be best if Phil Ivey won? No. What's best is if Leo Margets wins. A woman poker boom would be amazing. The ratio of men to women in poker is like 9:1. Leo showing that women can not only play with the boys, but beat the boys, would be amazing for the game.
And I gotta say, the women who do play poker, on average, are better than the average man. It makes sense because in order to survive in such a male-dominated field you have to be better. Women like Maria Ho, Kristen Foxen, Vanessa Selbst, and others have put together dominant careers at the table, despite...you know, the fat, smelly dudes who harass them. It's actually gotten way, way better at the tables over the last decade, as the great unwashed are mostly out of money, but I still can't imagine being a woman in poker.
Which is why Leo not only making the final table, but potentially winning, would be so great. It can usher in a new wave of women who feel comfortable at the table. It obviously won't be overnight like the Moneymaker Boom, that was a once in a lifetime thing, but her winning will definitely help. Shit, her just being there helps.
And how did she get there? Well first off, she's a beast. She's been a pro for a long time, and is a bracelet winner already. But the pivotal hand was with 16 left when she got in her pocket jacks vs AK and was outflopped...but she 4 flushed her way to victory.
A woman last made the Main Event final table in 1995 when Barbra Enright finished 5th in a field of 273. Leo's field was slightlyyyyy bigger, with 9,735 players ponying up the $10k this year.
Today is a day off, and the final table will start play tomorrow. If it can't be me, hoping it's Leo or Grinder. Mike winning the $50k PPC and the Main Event in the same year would be the biggest achievement in poker history. He's such a beast it's ridiculous.
358 days til next year's Main Event…time to lock in.
