It's Comical That Katy Perry Might Actually Sue Wendy's For Trolling Her Space Voyage On Twitter, Asking "Can We Send Her Back?"
Variety - Wendy’s has issued a statement to People magazine amid the buzz around its anti-Katy Perry post on X that asked if the singer can go back to space (aka get off Earth). The fast food chain went viral on April 14 when Perry joined Gayle King, Jeff Bezos’ partner Lauren Sanchez and other women on a Blue Origin trip to space. The account Pop Crave announced “Katy Perry has returned from space” after the mission ended, to which Wendy’s social media team replied: “Can we send her back.”
The fast food chain wrote another post on X that was critical of the Blue Origin space launch by saying: “When we said women in stem this isn’t what we meant.”
People is running a story about how Wendy’s should apologize to Perry, with one source telling the magazine: “This was a billion-dollar brand using its platform to publicly demean a woman.” However, the company stopped short of issuing an apology in its statement to the magazine.
“We always bring a little spice to our socials, but Wendy’s has a ton of respect for Katy Perry and her out-of-this-world-talent,” Wendy’s said in an official statement.
I know what everybody's thinking.
"Please, Barstool! PLEASE keep the Blue Origin female space expedition blogs coming. We beg you!"
Well, not to worry, diehard stoolies. Your boy's got you.
Here's the story People Magazine ran. Quoting "a source close to Katy Perry".
People - The source close to the situation tells PEOPLE that the company was out of line and that Perry deserves an apology.
“Wendy’s didn’t make a joke — they made a choice. Their recent posts on X aimed at Katy Perry were not only disrespectful, but blatantly inappropriate,” the source says.
“This wasn't harmless banter, this was a billion-dollar brand using its platform to publicly demean a woman,” the source adds, contending that "when billion-dollar brands join in, it’s irresponsible."
In response, Wendy's kept it positive but stopped short of an apology in a statement to PEOPLE.
"We always bring a little spice to our socials, but Wendy’s has a ton of respect for Katy Perry and her out-of-this-world-talent," the fast food company said.
The source close to the situation expressed dismay that the comments targeted a flight that featured an all-female crew.
"[Wendy's is] not adding to the conversation, they’re dragging it down and this kind of behavior contributes to a culture where women are punished for standing out or a woman daring to do something different is a target,” the source says.
“Telling a woman that she should be 'sent back' is shameful bullying and reflects a troubling willingness to tear down in today's society,” the source says. “What’s worse is that the face of Wendy’s is a woman, which makes this decision not just hypocritical, but painfully ironic.”
“Everyone expected more from a brand with this kind of platform. Wendy’s should ‘do the right thing’ (the name of one of their core values) apologize and do better in the future,” the source continues.
Ok "source close to Katy Perry"... don't bounce up and down if you're not Katy Perry's PR Firm.
Damn it. Whatever.
Here we go again. Wendy’s dropped a joke about Katy Perry coming back from space, and now people are losing their minds like someone drop kicked their dog into orbit.
This is what we’re getting upset about now? This?
We're talking about Wendy's twitter acount?
A fast food social media account trolling a celebrity who literally went to space with Jeff Bezos, and somehow, this is a cultural crisis?
A tweet. Not a national policy or a UN resolution on how we should handle space travel, just a little light-hearted ribbing from a fast food chain.
If you’re out here throwing a tantrum over a fast food account’s Twitter roast, I’ve got questions. How do you manage in the real world? Do you break down every time you get a bad Wi-Fi connection? Do you launch a full-blown investigation when your Uber driver takes the wrong turn? You’re getting offended by a tweet. Let that sink in.
Fuckin relax man.
Nobody was insinuating anything. Especially not for her to fucking die. A "coded message"? Exaggerate harder. You can't.
What’s even funnier is that people think Wendy’s owes Katy Perry an apology. Are you serious? An apology? For a joke? The same Wendy’s that has built its brand on roasting literally everyone, including their own customers? Wendy’s Twitter account has been serving up heat for years, and now suddenly, when they take a jab at a pop star, the world’s collective sense of justice is flipped upside down?
Get fucking serious.
Wendy’s didn’t demean anyone. They made a joke. Something that seems to be in short supply these days.
If anything, the outrage is more embarrassing than the joke itself. You’d think we’d grown past this point of fragile pussification, but clearly not.
Hit the fuckin music.
