It Just Means More: Election Debate In Montreal Was Rescheduled So Fans Could Watch The Canadiens Game Instead

AP -- Politics bowed to Canada’s most popular sport on Tuesday, when the French-language leaders’ debate was abruptly rescheduled to minimize a conflict with a Montreal Canadiens hockey game.

Two federal party leaders had called for the Wednesday evening debate to be moved, out of concern that the game could siphon off potential viewers…The televised event will now take place two hours earlier than planned.

As pleasurable as it is to shit on Canada, there's no denying the fact that they do hockey fandom better than anywhere else in the world. There's not a single city in America that can compete. Even fanbases that are hockey crazed like Boston and Minnesota don't have the same level of unhinged mania when it comes to their teams.

Which is why the Stanley Cup Playoffs are always infinitely better when more Canadian teams are in the mix. You get the incredible atmosphere at the beginning of the playoffs, and then you get the incredible heartbreak and misery when their hopes and dreams are crushed by a team from a state where it doesn't even snow. Just listen to the Bell Centre last night once the Habs clinched their spot in the playoffs.

This will be their first time getting to actually watch the Canadiens in the playoffs since 2017 since 2020 was in the bubble, and crowds were limited in 2021. The NHL is always better when there is playoff hockey in Montreal. Especially when you have a Canadiens team like this which has almost nothing to lose. They were the 16th and final team to clinch a playoff berth. They had a horrific start to the season, and everybody expected them to have a top 5 pick in the draft for the 3rd straight year. But ever since Patrik Laine jumped back into the lineup, this team has been a bunch of shit kickers.

Now you get a 19-year-old Ivan Demidov coming over from Russia to inject a little more juice into this team and fanbase. That's going to be a brutal barn for the Washington Capitals to have to play in for games 3 and 4. You have to imagine there's at least some sort of emotional let down from the Caps now that Ovechkin has broken Gretzky's goal record. That seemed to be the one thing really powering them through this season. Now that the chase is over, do they have enough left in the tank to fire it back up for a playoff run? Or are these pesky kids from Montreal who everybody already counted out going to send old man Ovi back to Moscow.

Yands knows puck.

This Habs team is hot. They are playing free. And they are dangerous. Plus we're getting quotes like this out of Marty St. Louis. Biggest weapon behind the bench these playoffs.
