Dave Has Never Been More Right About Anything Than He Was About Bandz A Make Her Dance
Dave isn't right about everything, but man, sometimes he just has his finger on a pulse that you didn't think he knew even existed. I hadn't talked to Dave about merch in years. When there's something worth making merch for, like a Nats World Series, or Jayden being drafted, we just go ahead and talk to the t-shirt folks and come up with some designs. Some shirts are duds, and others take off. My biggest shirt is pretty obvious- it's the Capitals "Our Year" shirt. Out of everything I've done, I think popularizing saying it's "Caps Year" which we changed to "Our Year" takes the cake. During the 2018 Stanley Cup run we sold thousands upon thousands. In Vegas since it was so hot outside everyone walked to the arena in their short sleeved shirt, jersey in hand, and I saw so many Our Year shirts it blew my god damn mind. They were everywhere.
Which brings us to a week and a half ago, March 30th to be exact. Every Sunday I text Dave and ask if he wants to do the Monday Rundown. Usually it's a "yes" or a "no". But this one...well it was different....
I was SO CONFUSED. How did Dave know about that? It's a silly little song Ovi and Jakob Chychrun occasionally sing in the tunnel before a game and Chyc's goal song. I thought only Caps Twitter knew about it. So I told him I thought it was sorta just too niche for a tshirt.
And then, wouldn't you know it the very next day Ryan Leonard joins the team, Ovi goes out for dinner and sodas with him, and this video goes viral:
I immediately at 11pm texted our merch team like hey I think we need a Bandz A Make Her Dance shirt. I told Pilar the story and she laughed at me and got the shirt in motion with our designers. And then right on cue the next morning, from Dave….

Dude is sharp as a god damn tack. I still couldn't figure out how he even knew about it, but I now realize it could be because there's edits all over TikTok and he had just spent the weekend with the Ice People and that had to have infiltrated his FYP due to the ridiculous algorithm.
Good thing the shirt was made and ready for launch, and it's pretty sweet too.
That niche little shirt sold a zillion immediately.

And I had to do it, I had to put the Our Year shirt back on sale for the first time since 2018. Is it? I guess we'll see.
In conclusion, it's been a very fun season so far and let us hope this goes deep into June. I'm not even remotely ready for it to end. And shout out Dave- when you're right you're right, and boy howdy he was right.
