Aimee Lou Wood Praises Mike White For Fighting For Her Role Of Chelsea On White Lotus, "HBO Didn't Want Me"
Looking back, the moment that really got into her head was when a producer approached her at the end of the first week of filming. “Someone told me how much Mike had fought for me. They said ‘it had to be you, no matter what HBO said.’ It was honestly from the nicest place, but my little head goes: ‘HBO didn’t want me. And I know why HBO didn’t want me, it’s because I'm ugly. Mike had to say ‘Please let me have the ugly girl!’” she laughs. “That was the thing that was in my head.”
First of all, shame on HBO! Don't meddle in the casting of White Lotus! Second of all, another tip of the cap to Mike White for knowing what's good. Aimee Lou Wood as Chelsea is as perfect as it comes where that kind of character is concerned. Real ones know her from Sex Education and if you know here character there, you can see how she'd be perfect as someone like Chelsea. Her delivery is perfection, her emotions are perfection...what would we have done without her?
Separately, her onscreen/offscreen relationship with Rick/Walton Goggins is one of the most interesting parts of this whole season. Did everyone catch Walton's post about Aimee (posing as Rick/Chelsea)? It was maybe the most romantic "farewell" I've ever seen, and these people aren't even actually dead!
Imagine if none of this happened because "HBO didn't like Aimee"? Insane. Leave the casting up to the writers/directors. Networks just cash those checks!! Stick your nose somewhere else! As always, IN MIKE WHITE WE TRUST.
