The Legendary Sean Connery Has Passed Away At 90

This is one that makes your heart sink a little bit.

Sean Connery, the Scottish-born actor who rocketed to fame as James Bond and became one of the movies’ most popular and enduring international stars, has died. He was 90.

Connery, long regarded as one of the best actors to have portrayed the iconic spy, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000 and marked his 90th birthday only in August. His death was confirmed by his family, according to the BBC.

Connery was an audience favorite for more than 40 years and one of the screen’s most reliable and distinctive leading men. Once pigeonholed as Ian Fleming’s sexy Agent 007, he went on to distinguish himself with a long and mature career in such films as “The Wind and the Lion,” “The Man Who Would Be King” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” (via Variety)

Sad news to start the weekend.

Sean Connery was one of those larger-than-life stars from Hollywood. A man whose relevancy in entertainment stretched decades, in all genres, roles, and mediums. The original James Bond, and the one most would call the absolute best, Connery's career feels like one of those we may never see again. Being a star for so many years, and crossing multiple generations, whether it be Bond, his various other great roles, or hell, even being parodied on SNL Celebrity Jeopardy, just seems impossible these days in this crowded landscape of movies and television.

Saying he is "most known" for James Bond is both true, and also sort of funny because some of his best roles and movies had nothing to do with 007. 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade', 'The Untouchables', 'The Hunt for Red October', I could go on and on. I even grew up loving his role in the, admittedly bad, 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'.

Unfortunately, his original James Bond movies aren't on streaming platforms, so you'll have to rent them, but here are a few of his movies on the popular streaming platforms:

'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade': Netflix
'The Untouchables': Starz
'The Hunt for Red October': Showtime
'The Rock': Hulu, Amazon Prime Video
'The Wind and the Lion': HBO Max
'A Bridge Too Far': Netflix
'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen': Amazon Prime Video
'Highlander': Amazon Prime Video, NBC Peacock
'Marine': NBC Peacock
'Outland': Starz
'Rising Sun': Starz

There are surely more, but those are just a few to dive into tonight if you want to watch a Sean Connery movie. Personally, I'll be tossing on 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' at some point today.

Rest in peace, Sean Connery.
